Newly Renovated Family Resource Center Looks To Continue Good Work in 2026

March 11, 2026

With funds provided by the Gun Barrel City Economic Development Corporation (GBCEDC), the Family Resource Center began undergoing major and much-needed renovations last fall. Those visiting the Center today will notice an entirely new and inviting storefront, complete with new handrails and a new parking lot. Gun Barrel City residents know that the Family Resource Center is never lacking in its generosity nor ambition to serve, so it’s only fair that generosity is reciprocated with a modern look in the new year.

How the Family Resource Center Aids and Empowers Gun Barrel City

The Family Resource Center is not just a thrift store storefront; it is a center for empowerment. What started as a friendly, charitable gesture at a card game amongst neighbors nearly fifty years ago has expanded into a thrift store used to raise funds to help neighbors in need.

Its primary mission is to protect and strengthen the resiliency of the Gun Barrel City community. Whether a resident is facing a sudden financial crisis or seeking long-term resources, the Family Resource Center provides a supportive environment where dignity and direct action go hand in hand. It’s why the city of Gun Barrel and it’s first responders rely on the Resource Center as a first point of contact to immediately ascertain the needs of its residents.

The Family Resource Center offers financial support to those needing help with utility bills or other sudden, unforeseen costs and circumstances as they arise. Additionally, the Center coordinates school drives for classroom supplies and other necessary expenditures and remains a proud Angel Tree sponsor around the holidays.

The Center also coordinates efforts with the Red Cross and local fire department to provide a first line of defense and maintain rapid response in the area. Red Cross ready-boxes are placed and provided by the Center throughout the community.

Material donations to the Family Resource Center often aid in the Center’s clothing support, where the establishment can provide professional attire to the unhoused in preparation for any upcoming job interviews. Additionally, the Center offers accessible prom attire so everyone has the chance to dance and celebrate with their peers.

The Family Resource Center’s Support Network

Holding true to the values and community of Gun Barrel City, the Family Resource Center does not operate in a vacuum. Its success is heavily reliant on collaborative relationships with several local organizations. By collaborating with organizations such as the GBCEDC, city council, and the city’s first responders, the Resource Center ensures that if a specialized need arises, any referral is seamless and immediate.

These partnerships allow the Center to leverage its limited staff and budget into a massive regional impact, effectively acting as the local "boots on the ground" for larger initiatives.

Gun Barrel City residents can continue to support the Family Resource Center via donations and spreading the word in the community and on social media.

Looking Toward the Future

As Gun Barrel City continues to grow in 2026, the Family Resource Center is evolving to meet new demands. The center remains a testament to the fact that no neighbor walks their toughest path alone.
