Get to Know Gun Barrel City EDC’s Executive Director Charles Houk

October 1, 2025

At the hub of Cedar Creek Lake, on the shores of opportunity, Charles Houk becomes the new Executive Director of Gun Barrel City Economic Development Corp (EDC). Houk brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for growth that’s already energizing the team and the community.

A Vision for Growth & Opportunity

Houk spent much of his career in North Texas, serving on economic development boards, nonprofit boards, city councils, and, most recently, as an EDC director in another fast-growing community. Along the way, he also built and ran his own business, which he attributes to his unique perspective on what it takes for companies to thrive.

With a unique blend of public, private, and nonprofit experience, Houk’s passion lies in combining real estate, analysis, negotiation, and deal-making with the added benefit of making a lasting impact on a community. Such a background gives him a more detailed degree of connecting the dots between community needs and business goals.

When asked what made him apply and accept the position, Houk said,

“What drew me to Gun Barrel City was the opportunity. This vibrant community on Cedar Creek Lake has incredible potential for growth - both in attracting new businesses and maximizing the tourism and quality of life assets that already make this such a special place. I saw a city poised for the next stage of development with a supportive leadership team and a business-friendly environment. .. This community is ready to welcome investment, create jobs, and continue building a strong local economy.”

Driving Smart, Sustainable Development

Connecting opportunity with action is the goal for economic development management. As the new executive director, Houk’s major responsibilities are to:

  • Drive business recruitment
  • Support existing businesses
  • Make sure Gun Barrel City is positioned for smart, sustainable growth.

This means building and maintaining strong relationships and ensuring the decision-makers know that Gun Barrel City is ready to partner with them. He will also:

  • Oversee expansion efforts
  • Keep an active inventory of available sites and buildings
  • Help companies navigate incentives to make their investment here successful

Because tourism and quality of life play big roles in the stability of the local economy, Houk’s focused on projects that showcase Cedar Creek Lake’s lakefront lifestyle, events, and community assets.

When asked if there was an exciting item in his pending folder as the new executive director, Houk said,

“One project I’m especially excited about is the Pier 334 development. This transformational waterfront project will bring new dining, shopping, entertainment, and hospitality to Cedar Creek Lake. It has the potential to be a real anchor for tourism and a catalyst for additional business investment through the city. We’re also seeing momentum in retail development along Highway 334, and are soon opening a new community center, both of which add to why Gun Barrel City is a great place to grow.”

On A Personal Note

As a Virginia Beach native who graduated from Virginia Military Institute, Houk and his family moved to Texas, as he says, “as soon as we could get here in 2003.” So, Texas is indeed home! Houk says, “Our family has loved being part of the growth, opportunity, and community spirit this state represents.”

Houk and his wife, Shyan, have three sons, Thomas, Ryan, and Jackson. Thomas is proudly serving as an active duty U. S. Marine. Ryan is a freshman in college. Jackson is a junior in high school.

Houk ended his interview with these positive words,

“I’m excited about the future of Gun Barrel City. We have a strong foundation, incredible community assets, and the momentum that makes businesses notice. My goal is to build on that energy, strengthen our partnerships, and make sure people know Gun Barrel City is not only a great place to visit, but a smart place to invest and grow.”
